Cultural Elements

Projects

P 2.1 Registration of Cultural Elements. Procedures for International Registration of Cultural Elements (Revision of ENV 12005). Work item approved. Issues document CEN/TC304 N579. Justification: Make preliminary information on cultural elements available to IT-industry and standardizers. Other ISO work is dependent on the existence of an international registry rather than than a European one, but the work on this has been stalled in SC22/WG20. Editor: Keld Simonsen

P 2.2 Cultural Elements. Draft document expected 1996-09. Issues document CEN/TC304 N448. Justification: Make preliminary information on cultural elements available to IT-industry and standardizers. Editor: Keld Simonsen.

P 11. Natural Languages. Repertoires of characters used for writing the indigenous languages of Europe. Draft document CEN/TC304 N634R. Issues document CEN/TC304 N451. Justification: Make information on which letters are needed for each language available to IT-industry and standardizers. Editor: Michael Everson

P 17. European default locale. Work item approved. Issues document CEN/TC304 N579. Justification: National cultural conventions are a major and important task to undertake for National Standards Bodies (NSBs). To provide default and guidelines for European NSBs, a European locale should be developed. NSBs can then concentrate on those aspects which are undeniably national and leaving the rest to follow the "European culture". A European locale is also needed by the institutions of the EU. Editor: Keld Simonsen.

P 19. Cooperation with language engineering projects. Internal work item. Issues document CEN/TC304 N576. Justification: Links to pre- and co-normative research. Editor: Different liaison officers.

P 21. National specifications of cultural conventions. Internal work item. Issues document CEN/TC304 N576. Justification: National standardization bodies are the major originators of input for the European Cultural Registry. Reliable information will be provided in the registry as national standards are prepared and adopted for the local cultural conventions. Editor: (National).

P 22. European Keyboards. European Keyboards - guidelines and overview. Proposed NWI. Issues document CEN/TC304 N576. Justification: Since the engraved character repertoire of keyboards vary among countries, as does the need to access foreign characters, there is a European need for national application guidelines on ISO/IEC 9995 and ISO 14755.
